How to Turn Your Social Media Marketing From Cost Center to Profit Center

How do you demonstrate social media ROI to your key stakeholders?

In 2015, over $24 billion will be spent on social media advertising. Now, more than ever, brands are creating digital content and campaigns for their online communities. With this large investment, the social landscape has become noisy and brands and publishers are fighting for virality.

With over 2 million blog posts published daily, Google CEO Eric Schmidt so famously noted that “more content is being created in 48 hours than what was produced from the beginning of time until 2003.”

Social content and the role of the Social Media Manager has transformed tremendously in the last five years. Engagement used to be king. Success was measured through amount of likes and shares. This is no longer the case.

Your social strategy needs to extend from just building brand loyalty and awareness to customer acquisition and retention. It’s imperative to create a strategy that proves the power of social media as a revenue channel.

Invest in the right content

To successfully transform your social media community from a cost center to a profit center, you need to understand which content is most effective.

Fortunately, the large array of analytics available can give highly actionable insights and results, so you can create a data-driven social strategy to justify your seat at the table.

Social media tools and tracking codes can help to gather insights about your content and audience. A few examples include:

  • Sprinklr, Hootsuite, Tweetdeck
    • These social CRM tools make it easy to to schedule, draft, post, and analyze all social content
  • Facebook and Twitter Platform Insights
    • Take advantage of the built-in analytics published by the platforms themselves.
  • KISSmetrics

These tools and metrics can truly define your strategy. You can learn:

  • Best times to post
  • What your community is saying
  • Who your brand advocates are
  • What links are being clicked on
  • App download rates
  • Number of social shares

Use these insights to optimize your content calendar with appropriate brand messaging and creatives. The more targeted your posts, the higher the engagement and conversion rates will be.

Invest behind the right content & platforms

Now that you have your content calendar down, make sure you are posting to the correct social channels. Each day there is a new social media platform launching: Periscope, Meerkat, Ello launched within the last several months and already changed how brands can communicate with their customers. Make sure you are using your time and resources correctly and focus on channels where your customers are. For example, if you have a predominantly male audience, it doesn’t make sense to invest heavily on Pinterest – which has a 68% female audience.

Clearly define your KPIs and if they fit for each platform. For direct-response campaigns, Facebook and Twitter are well suited for signups or e-commerce conversions.

If Facebook or Twitter have proven to be strong content channels, consider pushing ad budgets using the targeting tools provided.

For Facebook:

  • Custom or “Look-a-like” Audiences
    • Target the right audience demographics who will turn into high-converting users
    • Upload a list of email addresses from your customers to find similar audiences
  • Dark Posts
    • News Feed style ads that don’t publish to your timeline or in your fans’ newsfeeds. These are helpful for spreading the word without spamming your fans.

Custom-Audiences

For Twitter:

  • Promoted Tweets
    • You can target promoted tweets at potential customers who follow or favorite similar companies to yours. You can even target your competitors’ followers with custom tweets.
  • Website Cards
    • Website Cards allow you to showcase website content within a Tweet, giving users the ability to preview an image, related context and a clear call to action all from their home timeline.

Keep abreast on industry trends and changes. Facebook announced at F8 that video ads were going to be key for brands. Create content that your audience will see, especially as Facebook’s organic algorithm is constantly evolving.

For brand awareness, platforms like Instagram and Snapchat are key, since their native content is naturally product-centric. Both platforms are toying with advertising, but right now, brands should use these platforms to tell their stories through engaging photos and video content. Use them to build out a strong organic following and track your follower growth by monitoring likes, comments, regrams, hashtag use, and number of viewers of Snapchat stories.

Build Your Community

Your community is your key to success. Followers spread the word about the benefits of your products and offerings. Reward them, and in doing so, you will build out your brand and see an increase in conversions.

Social media contests are a great way to do this. Each channel has different rules and ways to hold a contest, but all can produce the same result — more followers, sale conversions, and user-generated content.

Use the UGC from your contests in your own marketing materials. Take testimonials from your comment-to-win contests and create blog posts from those comments. And create a landing page of all the contest photos and videos to spread your brand personality. The best part of this kind of two-way communication is that you’re able to generate a bunch of content from your own community members.

Popular contest across channels on Instagram include:

  • Like-to-Win
  • Reposting Events
  • Tag Friends
  • Comment-to-Win
  • Purchase-to-Play

Purchase-to-Play contests has fans snap a picture with your product so that their Instagram followers take notice. The winner may be the most creative, the funniest, or the best presented post. This kind of contest provides an incentive for your followers to purchase your products, which can be boosted by influencers, so it’s an easy way to drive ROI.

Pinterest:

  • Pin to Win
  • Best Board

There’s a low threshold for participation in Pin to Win contests. The contests produces a multitude of repins from your brand and are great advertisements for your products.

Twitter:

  • Retweet
  • Creative Answer with hashtag

Retweet contests are a win-win for brands and followers. With only a click of a button, brands are able to spread their messaging and calls-to-actions. Additionally, it is a ripple effect, as the follower’s followers will see the tweet and engage in the contest.

Special promotions

You can incentivize your community to spread the word to their family and friends via referrals in order to participate in events, contests or promotions (give $20, get $20). By doing this, you can engage your audience in a fun way while tracking customer behavior and measuring the virality of different types of events. When your consumers share their referral links, you can have them send pre-written copy that they can share across all social media channels.

Furthermore, everyone loves a sale, and promo codes are the marketer’s dream, because they allow for conversions and further behavioral insights. You can reward your loyal social media fans with a discount code and see your reach spread quickly. Create a different code for each social channel and see how many sales each campaign generates.

Partner with Influencers

According to a McKinsey Study, marketing-inspired word-of-mouth via “peers” generates more than twice the sales of paid advertising, with a 37% higher retention rate.

On Instagram and YouTube alone, there are over 150,000 social media influencers who have anywhere from thousands to millions of fans and are trusted for their opinions on anything from fashion, beauty, lifestyle, fitness, food and other product choices. You can harness the power of influencers to create high-quality content and spread the word about your brand, review your products and run giveaways.

Influencer content is also among the highest converting content there is today, because their content is naturally talking about what to buy. It’s not uncommon to see CPC ranges in the $1-2 or even less than $1, particularly when the influencer is a good fit with the brand. That’s why it’s important to find influencers that match your brand in terms of content, style and audience, as well as making sure that they actually like the product they’re promoting.

You might have heard of larger influencers like Josh Ostrovsky and Jen Selter working with big brands like Lululemon and Nike. They’ve been featured on major media channels and even started their own ventures.

But you don’t need to have a big budget to work with influencers. There are all kind of influencers across each vertical that don’t demand $15,000 per campaign. In fact, you can find influencers at all price ranges, including those who might post in exchange for commissions, cross-promotion or even just getting to try cool products from your store. As long as you have a brand that is exciting, you can find people to promote it.

Numerous e-commerce brands have scaled their business with influencer marketing. In four years, Bellami Hair became a multi-million dollar business by producing videos with hundreds of popular YouTube beauty gurus. Not only has this been tremendous for their brand, but their average video sees an ROI of several hundred percent on sales. They’ve gotten so good at co-branding with influencers that they now do celebrity endorsements with Kylie Jenner.

L*Space by Monica Wise and Triangl Swimwear are two great examples of how fashion brands became Instagram sensations, powering their growth. L*Space became a phenomenon by gifting products to fashion bloggers and lifestyle Instagrammers and cross-promoting on over 100 Instagram posts that reach 20+ million people every month.

Here are three steps to building a sustainable influencer strategy:

  • Find the right influencers that match your brand
    • Does their content align with yours?
    • How is their engagement rate?
    • What is their subscriber growth?
  • Your creative should match your campaign goals and the best way to show off your products:
  • In-depth dedicated videos & product reviews are great for driving sales and signups
  • Instagram #OOTD posts and YouTube favorites/haul videos can reach a large audience quickly and effectively
  • Giveaways can generate tremendous engagement around your brand in the form of new followers, likes and comments
  • Analyze, Re-invest, Repeat
    • Not every video will be a colossal success. The key is generating a variety of content, tracking which posts/creators are successful, and re-investing behind them.

Monetize your Audience

Once your organic following has healthy growth, focus on monetization. Your followers are already engaged with your content. It is now easy to convert them into customers. 30-50% of your posts should be product related with strong purchasing calls-to-action. Use third party social media selling tools like Soldsie and Curalate in alignment with your content strategy.

Soldsie allows your followers to purchase directly from Facebook and Instagram. Your followers just comment #Sold or with a branded hashtag and then are sent an email to checkout. This way they can shop from anywhere — as most of your consumers are already checking their social media feeds.

Birchbox-Instagram-Selling

Photo: Birchbox uses social selling with Soldsie

Another social selling tool is Curalate, which makes your entire Instagram feed clickable, and ultimately shoppable. All of your product photos can now link to your e-commerce website for checkout. Not only can you use this for product photos, but for blog content that you want to see higher readership. Just put the link in bio and then track sales and clickthrough rates from your Instagram photos.

Nordstrom-Curalate

Photo: Nordstrom uses Curalate to make their Instagram feed shoppable

You can now directly attribute product purchases from social media. This is important, because there is 75% web shopping cart abandonment, and now social media can be a driver in generating revenue right from the platform. By using social selling tools, you can easily target your customers where they are already spending their free time.

Social selling not only produces conversion rates, but also positions your brand as innovative within the social media landscape. You can find additional value adds from working with these tools including collecting emails that can be used for your database and increased follower reach — as your customers are putting in their email addresses when they register for these tools.

From all of this direct social sales, it is important to measure the average value of your followers on different social networks. Track sales on your social posts to understand how many followers are converting, which allows you to understand how much you can spend to acquire new followers. From there you can create allocate budget to growth marketing, influencer marketing, and direct advertising.

Gain SEO and Sales from YouTube Videos

YouTube has been a phenomenal channel for brands to invest marketing dollars into over the last few years. In addition to being able to work with thousands of YouTube influencers to promote your brand, it is also the world’s second largest search engine, which means you can drive considerable SEO by producing solid videos, or having influencers make them for you.

Elle-Bangs-1

It’s also easy to measure and track success thanks to the number of CTA options, from annotations directly in the video to tracking links in the description. YouTube also recently unveiled shoppable ads, which will allow you to sell products directly via YouTube videos created on your own channel or influencers’ channels.

Final Thoughts

As Instagram has become the new magazine, influencer marketing the new word of mouth, and YouTube the new television, social media strategies must reflect the ongoing changes to the digital landscape. Never before have marketers been able to pull out as many customer insights, testimonials, and follower data. Social media has changed how brands communicate with their audience, and now it is time to turn those conversations into conversions. By incorporating these tools and techniques, you can demonstrate a strong social media ROI to the important stakeholders.

Why You Need to Start Creating Visual Content

Back in the day, infographics were used to visualize data. Presenting data visually was a super-handy technique if you had a lot of complex data and needed a way to translate it.

Today, infographics are used to visualize content. In some cases, you’ll find the infographic that visualizes basic data. It’s more rare to find an infographic that displays a large amount of complex data. But more often than not, you’ll find infographics displaying simple data or visualizing content.

And the practice of presenting content in images goes beyond infographics. Vox is leading the way with videos instead of plain-text content. Want to know about Deflategate? Instead of reading a long Wikipedia article, watch this 1 ½ minute video that breaks down the entire scandal.

Funders and Founders produces graphs that visualize content. Here’s the depiction of Paul Graham’s Do Things That Don’t Scale essay.

Snapguide writes visual-based guides. They keep the text minimal and focus on the visuals.

The Washington Post uses photography to tell stories. Take in the day’s news by viewing photographs with short captions.

None of this means written content is dead. It does mean that content is changing.

What visualization does is solve problems for people. The attention span for your average adult is no more than a couple of minutes. Visualizing content allows readers/viewers to take in content in a much shorter amount of time. This is your opportunity if you’re a content marketer. People want answers, and most of them don’t want to sift through a 2,000-word blog post to get the gist of it. If you can consistently create visualized content, you’ll be two steps ahead of most of your competitors.

Today’s post shows you the best ways to visualize content. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that it’s in infographic form.

The first fully solar-powered school district should happen this summer

Students in a small region of southern Iowa again see the great technological changes in the fall. The more workers were to transform school buildings in the first district of Iowa completely powered by the sun.

In January, the district WACO farm installed a large solar collector behind the building of the primary school in Crawfordsville. In July, work should begin in another solar farm next to the main building of the school in Wayland. When all is done, solar energy should provide more than 90 percent of the electricity needs of the district.

From the street, WACO elementary as little primary school building in the city. But Superintendent Darrell Smith said that when he heard the buzz of the orders of the collector panel behind the school, it’s the sound of money in the bank.

“The first conversation we had was, ‘How can we reduce General Fund spending and save money for the district wanted to help the general fund and has evolved”? We were the first to go full sun in Iowa, “Smith said.

The director said that the initial configuration of the solar panel has already had an impact, saving about $ 20,000 in energy costs, while from the beginning of the year. After that, Smith began looking for ways to expand the use of solar energy throughout the district.

Another large solar park is expected to land next to the main building of the school in Wayland. Smith believes will bring the percentage of the area supplied by the sun to more than 90 percent. Given cloudy days in Iowa, he said here that almost 100 percent of solar energy as expected.

On sunny days, the solar panels should provide the district as much as 110 percent of the energy used. With net metering, the surplus is returned to the system of Alliant Energy and brought credit to the district.

WACO solar Conversation became a teaching moment this spring as 5 and 6 students took daily measurements ahead and calculates the output power. Professor Chad McClanahan said students began rooting for sunny days for the system to produce more energy.

“That gives you a sense when you can see what is happening and it makes a difference when it comes to science and green energy, and then say” Come look, “he said.

Superintendent Smith said WACO struggled trying to reach the final push spring sun. The original solar park was financed by a tax of one cent local option. But this money might not cover an additional system. The district wanted to take advantage of solar tax credits and private investment needed to buy the system with a lease-back and eventual sale of the district. Iowa law has no rules to cover this type of financial agreement.

Smith said the Iowa Department of Education has worked with the neighborhood and eventually found a way to make the project a reality. So when the sun shines at the end of August, this means more savings for the district of about 500 students.

It is expected that members of the Board of Directors of the WACO school for open tenders and approve the solar expansion in mid-June At least a dozen school districts in Iowa contact the responsible WACO ask how they did it.

A Foolproof Method for Creating Content That Converts

Get to work on your next content masterpiece. Image source.

When your content is mediocre, it’s nearly impossible to get people to pay attention.

But when your content is amazing, it’s easy to promote it. It’s easy to drive traffic. And it’s much easier to pull in qualified leads.

To create amazing content, we’re going to steal a technique from Brian Dean.

It’s called the Skyscraper Technique, and it’s based around creating content so valuable that it “towers” above your competitor’s content – hence the name.

This is what gives your content a competitive edge, making it easier to get social shares and backlinks.

The technique involves three main steps:

  1. Find content that’s already proven to get social shares and backlinks
  2. Publish content that’s better than anything else out there on that topic
  3. Promote it to drive traffic and capture leads.

Simple enough? Let’s break it down.

1. Find content that is proven to perform well

To find content that is tried-and-true, we’re going to start with a tool called Buzzsumo.

Buzzsumo is a search engine that finds the most highly shared content for any given search term. It even provides the exact number of shares per article on each of the major social media networks.

Here’s an example:

If I do a search for “landing page design”…

Buzzsumo 1

… Buzzsumo pulls up all of the landing page design articles with the most social shares:

Buzzsumo 2
Buzzsumo 3

If the most shared articles on a topic have a lot of social shares (in the ballpark of 500+), that topic is proven to be popular. This means that if you create a piece of content on that topic, it’s already predestined to get social shares.

So here’s what you’re going to do:

First, do a search on Buzzsumo for a topic you would like to write about. If the top articles have received a good amount of social shares, make a list of the most shared articles and read through each one.

As you’re reading, jot down two things:

  1. The information that is mentioned over and over again in each article. This is standard information on the topic. Therefore, it should not be left out of your content, otherwise your content will be incomplete.
  2. The crucial information that most of the articles are not addressing or are only touching on. This is one of the components that will set your content apart.

I prefer to keep track of this in a spreadsheet, like so:

Spreadsheet 1 2

Then gather data from Topsy

Next, we’re going to use another useful tool called Topsy.

Topsy is a search engine that shows you all of the top tweets for a given search term. You can also filter your searches by influencers, links, tweets, photos and videos.

Topsy 1

For example, if I do a search for “landing page design,” Topsy pulls up the top tweets within a specific date range:

Topsy 2

You’ll want to use Topsy to find all of the tweets related to your keyword. Then, you’ll want to see which related articles influencers are tweeting about. To do this, get another spreadsheet ready:

Spreadsheet 2

Search for articles that are getting a ton of tweets. Then, filter your search by “Influencers” to see what people with the largest social media followings are tweeting about. To do this:

  1. Use the sidebar option to filter by influencers.
Topsy 3
  1. Then click on the “Mentions” link below each influencer to see what content they’re sharing.
Topsy 4 Paint
  1. Grab those URLs as well, and jot down which influencers are sharing this content.
  2. Next, follow the same steps you did with the articles you found using Buzzsumo. Take note of 1) the information that’s mentioned over and over again and 2) the crucial information that is being left out or neglected.

Then grab some data from good ol’ Google

Finally, we want to find content that is proven to get backlinks and rank in Google. Get a third spreadsheet ready for this step and then:

  1. Type your keyword into Google and grab the URLs of the top 10-20 search results (skip Wikipedia pages and such).
  2. Plug each URL into a backlink checker, like Ahrefs or SEO Spyglass. Copy-paste each URL that has received a good amount of backlinks into your spreadsheet.

Depending on your niche, this threshold could be over 10 backlinks – or it could be over 50. You can’t say without looking at it relatively. Look at how many backlinks the top ranking articles are getting, and compare those numbers to the lower ranking articles. This will give you an idea of what an impressive number of backlinks looks like.

  3. Lastly, go through each one and take note of the same two pieces of information you did with the previous articles.

And what are you left with?

By now, you know which types of articles are proven to get social shares, backlinks and rank in search engines.

But you also know:

  • What information must be included
  • Which information will set your content apart
  • What content the most influential people/companies are sharing on this topic (and who they are!)

Not bad. But now it’s time to make your content better than anything else out there.

2. Create amazing content that’s better than the rest

Since you read through all of the most shared articles, you have intimate knowledge of the best content on your chosen subject.

Now it’s time to make your content better. Your goal should be to create the number one resource for this information.

How do you do this?

Well, you have a number of options:

  1. Make it longer. As long as you’re making every word count, more information = more value. Longer content also gives off a higher perceived value, because it has a “wow factor” that makes people more likely to share it. For example, if most of the current articles give 5-10 tips, include 15-20 tips in your article, and you could induce that “wow factor.”

In terms of ranking in Google, this study found that at least 1,500 words is a good starting point for ranking on the first page (and thus receiving more backlinks).

  2. Make it actionable. Think of your article as a dinner recipe. Give people step-by-step instructions on how to accomplish what you’re teaching.

Link to tools and credible sources that will help them out. Give them everything they need to master the topic at hand. The more tangible value people get out of your content, the more likely they’ll be to share it on social media.

  3. Make it visual. Include screenshots, diagrams, pictures, and videos to help explain your topic. Not only does this make your content more useful, it can increase its perceived value as well.
  4. Make it user-friendly. Consider user experience as you create your content. Include in-text navigation links so people can jump from one section to another. Create a table of contents at the beginning of your content and a link within each section that brings people back to the top of the page. (Here’s a nifty guide for including in-text links.)

All of these things provide added value on top of the information you’re teaching people.

This makes your content more shareable and more linkable. And what do shares and links get you?

That’s right!

Traffic, subscribers and leads.

3. Promote your content to get social shares and drive traffic

Now that you’ve got so much awesome content, it’s time to push it out into the world. Here are four traffic generation channels you can try:

  1. Twitter
  2. Forum marketing
  3. Quora
  4. BuzzBundle

(Tactics for using these channels for lead gen are broken down – in detail – in my previous Unbounce article, A Step-by-Step Guide to Generating Leads with Your Content.)

These strategies will help you generate consistent traffic with your content. However, if you want big bursts of traffic, you need a little muscle play.

Now, if you don’t have a large social media following, email list, or high-powered connections, it can be tough to make this happen.

The solution is to harness the followings of other people, even if you don’t have a personal connection with them. All you need to do is reach out to social media influencers in your space and ask them to share your content with their followers.

I know. You’re not the asking type right? You’re used to making things happen under your own control? I’m the same way. But you’ve got to suck up your pride and nurture some humility, because you absolutely don’t want to miss out on the results this can bring you.

Reach out to influencers you’ve mentioned in the past

If you have included additional sources in your content, you’ve likely mentioned and linked to some of these influencers already.

Here’s an example from one of my articles:

Content Promotion 1

Go back through your content and find more places to naturally feature other influencers. These mentions are going to be your ticket into the influencer’s inbox.

Next, pull together a list of influencers to contact about your content, starting with the people you’ve already mentioned.

Send them an email that goes something like this:

Hi [NAME],

I’m new to the internet business world, but I’ve learned a lot through your writing.

I’m venturing out on my own now, and I’ve started a blog/business as a content marketer. I love writing about this stuff, and I just wanted to throw my latest article your way. It’s an in-depth tutorial on lead generation:

http://YOURWEBSITE.com/YOUR-CONTENT

I mentioned [COMPANY] in the first tactic, and used your ebooks and internet marketing course as an example of a high value giveaway people should aim for.

If you think people could learn a lot from it, and if you have a second, would you mind sharing the article for me?

If not, no worries. I’m just trying to get it in front of people’s eyes, and hopefully, give them an actionable guide to help grow their businesses.

Anyway, thanks for all of the great content you’ve put out. You’ve given me an amazing foundation to help me build my business.

Have a good one,

Michael

This is the exact copy of an email I sent out to an influencer a while back (minus the capitalized words), and they ended up sharing my content:

Content Promotion 2

This person has over 170,000 followers.

Reach out to your Topsy influencer list too

Then, pull out the influencer list you created from Topsy, and send an email to these people, mentioning that:

  1. You like what they’re doing
  2. You noticed they shared a specific article
  3. You just created a similar piece of content you think they might enjoy, and would they mind sharing it if they have the time?

However, don’t think that just because you ask, an influencer will share your content.

In general, the following criteria should hold true:

  • Your content should be related to their area of interest
  • You should have expressed genuine interest in who they are and what they do. You’re not just trying to use them
  • Your content should be extremely valuable, because by sharing your content, they’re saying that it’s good enough for them to endorse. If it’s not good enough, they won’t endorse it

That’s why it’s so important to create amazing content. No matter how nice your email is, if the content doesn’t deliver, they won’t share it.

I suggest going through a similar process every time you create content that’s intended to drive traffic and generate leads.

The overall quality of your content will skyrocket, and so will your traffic, subscribers and leads.

How to create content that improves lives

Content is such a powerful marketing asset because of the impact it makes in people’s lives.

When you help someone solve their problems for free, they associate you with the solution. You become the one that helped them out when they needed it. In their minds, you’re the person or business who shared the secrets of your profession with them – for nothing in return. That’s a valuable gift.

That’s when people start to see you as a teacher rather than a business – and your content’s immense value starts doing the marketing for you.

People are naturally skeptical of businesses and their motives. But people trust teachers. The more valuable your content, the more they will trust you. And they won’t just trust you. They will trust the quality of your products and services.

So, how do you create content that improves lives, while achieving the business goals you’re striving for?

You genuinely care about the people your business serves. Cultivate a drive to genuinely help them solve their problems. This becomes your first and foremost goal. It becomes your purpose. Not money. Not sales. Not traffic, leads, or subscribers. But rather, a genuine caring for helping out the people your business serves.

And with the tactics and strategies you have learned here, the rest will fall into place.

After all, content isn’t just a marketing asset. It’s a way to improve lives.
